Kelly Canyon

Forum for Ride

Kelly Canyon is well known for its ATV rides. There are many trails all over the area, with lots of great scenery and variety. When riding in the Kelly area, it is fun to ride several of the trails. Three of my favorite are the Poison Flat trail, the Wolverine Canyon Creek trail, and the Leaning Fir trail. All are close together and can be ridden easily in a couple of hours. They are connected by gravel and dirt roads, so you can park the rig, unload, and ride all three.

A good place to park is the Kelly Canyon Ski Resort parking lot. Plenty of room to park and unload. Get on the main road, drive east until you come to the split in the road. Instead of going straighy to Moody Meadows, turn right and head towards Table Rock Campground. About 1 mile or so down the road is the Poison Flat Trailhead.

Poison Flat Trail

The Poison Flat Trail is the shortest of the three, and only takes 20 minutes to ride, but it is such a pretty little trail that it is worth it.

The trail is well groomed with lots of lush vegitation.

Wolverine Creek Trail

After the Poison Flat trail comes to the main road (this is the road to Moody Meadows), take a right and drive down the road about 2 or 3 miles. As you see roads take off to the right, look down them until you see the sign for Wolverine Creek Trail.

This is a sweet little trail. Lots of lush vegitation, very few rocks, and lots of tight "through the woods" twists and turns. What a blast. There are some cattle in the area, so watch out. In fact, I came face to face with a black angus bull. The bull stood right in the middle of the trail and wouldn't move. So, I backed off the trail, pulled out my camera, and waited for the guy I was riding with to catch up. He squared of with the bull and punched the throttle on his Honda. The bull turned tail and ran. It happend so fast, this is the only shot I could get.

Anyway, this is a fun trails with lots of great scenery.

Leaning Fir Trail

After completing Wolverine Canyon, you will be at the Snake River. Turn right and follow the road until you see, what do you know, but a leaning fir tree.

This is by far the narliest of the three trails. In fact, if you don't like rocky trails and steep hill climbs, maybe you should skip this trail. On the other hand, it is the most scenic of the three trails, ending up right above the Kelly Canyon Ski Resort.

Another good thing is that it ends up right at the Kelly Canyon Ski resort parking lot, which is right where you started.
