Near West Yellowstone is a beautiful ride called Lions Head Trail. This is a premier ride with
some of the most beautiful country I have seen. About 99% of the ride is in Montana, but one little
piece is in Idaho, so we'll count this as an Idaho ride. (-;
I would like to thank Jack Handly for sending this
ride to me along with the GPS file and some pictures. That made it so easy to find and
document, and I must say it is one of the most fun rides I have been on and I will ride it many times.
To get to the trailhead head for West Yellowstone though Island park on US Hwy 20.
Drive a few miles past the Montana border until you see some small town. If you get to the town of West Yellowstone you are about 10 miles to far. This one is easiest to find using the GPS coordinates...that is how we found it.
We turned left off the highway, and the road was a narrow forest service road. Follow it for not quite a mile and there is a nice open place to park.
There are lots of trails in the area, so if you don't have all day, just download the kml file and load it into you GPS. This can be done with DNR Garmin, free software that can load a KML into just about any Garmin GPS that can be hooked up to a computer.
