West of Mackay is the beautiful Copper Basin. This remote area has some very rugged mountains and amazing scenery. There are high altitude alpine lakes where the fishing is good, and many places to camp. All this makes for a great place to ATV, and Copper Basin doesn't disappoint. It is quite a drive out there so plan on having at least an entire day to kill, but it is worth it.
To get to the trail head to Mackay. It may be wise to fill up in Mackay, because finding the trailhead is not exactly straight foward, and if you get lost out there, you will be glad you have a full tank of gas.
This is one of the few trails that I have inluded an interactive Google map just to find the trailhead. The drive to the trailhead was just about as entertaining as the ATV trail. The scenery was awesome
This trail is awesome, but it is one rocky son-of-a-gun. You almost need a kidney belt. But you will not be disappointed. The scenery is some of the most beautiful the world has to offer. The trails is well marked...just follow the signs. You will see several lakes, so bring a fishing pole. This would be my first choice to load up the ATVs with sleeping bags and camping gear and spend a few days out relaxing and fishing. We passed several people doing just that. I was jealous...
