High Desert

Forum for Ride

Located about 15 miles north of the St. Anthony sand dunes are some facinating desert features. From lava tubes to craters, this area makes for a fun and interesting trail ride.

The easiest way to get to the desert from southern locations is to drive north on US-20 and take the north Rexburg exit.

Drive north on the Salem Highway for about 30 miles. You will go past the sand dunes.

Because there are so many trails in the desert, the only sure way to navigate to the interesting spots is to use GPS. Just pick a road that goes in the general directions, and use your GPS to find the exact spot. The following map shows the route we took, and the GPS coordinates of each point of interest that we found are listed below.

The ice caves are an interesting place. You need rope and flashlights to get down in, but once in the caves there is a beautiful display of ice formations.

The desert formations are really cool to see. Because there is a lot of basalt to drive over, be sure to take a tire patch kit, just in case.
